STEM Features
STEM is much more than its subject-specific acronym suggests. As you’ll see in our STEM Academy courses, STEM includes all subjects and fields that push an individual to be creative, design, problem solve, think critically, innovate, and communicate in real-world scenarios and with real-world problems. STEM experiences build abilities to either enter the workforce or enter college with foundational 21st-century skills and hands-on experiences needed to be contributing citizens in our rapidly advancing global economy.
-
PROJECT AND PROBLEM-BASED
STEM activities involve project and problem-based learning. At the foundation for STEM education, these learning strategies focus on preparing students for life after school to address the complex challenges and problems in our world.
-
ESSENTIAL 21st-CENTURY SKILLS
STEM experiences provide opportunities to develop 21st-century skills, also known as employability skills. The 4 C's (collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication) are by far the most popular, however, there are more. We promote adaptability, confidence, problem-solving, curiosity, perseverance, active-listening, leadership, self-discipline, and self-regulation.
-
FUTURE PROOF
STEM experiences provide students opportunities to learn how to learn. A 2017 Dell report predicts future employment will value in-the-moment learning and the ability to gain new knowledge higher than the knowledge people already have.
-
LEARN BY DOING
STEM experiences involve doing and making in real-world environments and with real-world problems. Doing-based learning is essential in gaining knowledge and developing skills. Research by the ITEEA & FTEE found that 99% of STEM teachers say students learn better by doing. 94.5% of these teachers say that they would have their students do more activities in class if they had more time and resources.
